Frequently Asked Questions

What is lye and is it dangerous?

When the lye solution is mixed with fats and oils, they transform into soap, which is also known as saponification. Most of the saponification process happens in the first 2 days. At this time, about 95% of the lye has completed the process. The 4-6 week curing time takes care of the remaining amount. In short, while lye is caustic when working with it, soap that is created with lye and fully cured will do no harm to your skin.

What are the tiny white spots on my soap bars?

Don’t worry – that is not lye! Those are called stearic spots and they happen when you use oils and fats that are high in stearic or palmitic acid. Many of our ingredients in our soap hit this mark, but these acids bring a lot of skin benefits with them, so we like to think of those spots as proof that you’re getting some good stuff!

Are fragrance oils the same as essential oils?

No, but both are great for soap, and it simply comes down to personal preference. Fragrance oils are a mixture of aroma chemicals and a natural ingredient, like an essential oil. This means it is not all natural. However, in comparison to essential oils, fragrance oils hold a longer lasting and more consistent scent. We enjoy making a stronger scented bar, but if that isn’t something that you’re looking for, check out our fragrance oil and colorant free soap bar – which smells amazing all on its own!

Can I special order my favorite scent?

We will gladly take special order requests for a full loaf (10 bars from a single batch - same color & same fragrance), but not every fragrance oil is built for cold process soap. Special orders will have a 4–6 week processing time and money is due at the time the order is placed. Contact us to see how we can help you!
